Father Oscar Vogel

Father Vogel was born at Wright, KS on June 30, 1908 and later attended the parochial school in Wright. He continued his education at Maur Hill, Atchison; St. Joseph’s, Hays; and St. Thomas Seminary, Denver, and was ordained for the Diocese of Wichita in the cathedral by Bishop Schwertner on May 22, 1937. Following his ordination he was made pastor of St. Catherine’s Parish in Dubuque and in 1943 moved to St. Michael’s Parish in La Crosse. He spent part of 1944 and most of 1945 in the hospital because of heart problems. In 1945 he became chaplain of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and chaplain of the Hutchinson Reformatory. On October 3, 1947 he was made pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul’s Parish in North Ellinwood where he remained until his death in the rectory on January 18, 1951 at the age of 42. Bishop Carroll was celebrant and Father William Vogel, brother of Fr. Oscar, was deacon of the Pontifical Mass of Requiem at St. Andrew’s Church, Wright.
