Father Patrick J. Maloney

Father Maloney was born on March 20, 1875 in Bodyke, County Clare, Ireland and studied for the priesthood at St. Flanan’s College in Ennis and St. Patrick’s College in Carlow. He was ordained for the Diocese of Wichita in Ireland on June 1, 1901. His first assignment was to the Pro-Cathedral where he had responsibility for the missions of Wellington, Pratt, Kingman, Augusta and El Dorado. A year later he was moved to Danville where he built a church and another church in Anthony. In 1913 he took a leave because of illness. Upon his return he served at the cathedral, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Hutchinson, Moline, and again at the cathedral. In 1925 he entered Wichita Hospital for tuberculosis where he died eight months later on July 1, 1926. Bishop Schwertner celebrated Father Maloney’s funeral at the cathedral and said in his sermon, “Father Maloney was a pious priest of great faith. He has done noble work for this diocese.” (The Catholic Advance, July 10, 1926)
