Msgr. Herbert Hertel
Msgr. Hertel was born in Chilton, WI on July 30, 1916. After attending Kenrick Seminary, St. Louis, MO he was ordained for the Diocese of Wichita at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay, WI on April 25, 1942. He served as an assistant for two years at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Pittsburg and as pastor at Scamon with Mineral and Weir as missions; Iola; St. Mary’s Parish, Parsons; All Saints, Wichita; Andover; and Mount Vernon and Waterloo. He was appointed Vicar Forane of the Parsons Deanery and of the South Sedgwick Deanery; was named a monsignor in 1965; and was a diocesan consultor. On November 30, 1992 he retired to a house near All Saints Parish and died on June 18, 2001. Bishop Gerber was celebrant and homilist of Msgr. Hertel’s funeral Mass at the cathedral and he was buried in St. Rose Cemetery in Mount Vernon. Msgr. Hertel built the school in Iola, the church at St. Mary’s Parish in Parsons, and the church in All Saints Parish in Wichita and he was a skilled carpenter and cabinetmaker.
