Msgr. John O’Brien

Msgr. O’Brien was born at Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland on June 18, 1875. He studied at St. Michael’s College, Listowel and at St. Patrick’s College in Carlow where he was ordained on June 9, 1900. Bishop Hennessy assigned him to St. Theresa’s Parish in Hutchinson as an assistant for one year. During the 47 years of his priesthood he was pastor in only two places: Walnut for 20 years and Coffeyville for 26 years. Bishop Winkelmann made him a diocesan consultor in 1940 and a monsignor in 1943. “He was a quiet, unassuming, mild-mannered man. He accomplished many things and was particularly adept in convert-making.” (The Advance Register, Oct. 10, 1947) Msgr. O’Brien died unexpectedly in the Holy Name Rectory in Coffeyville at noon on Oct. 3, 1947. Bishop Mark K. Carroll officiated at the Solemn Mass of Requiem at Holy Name Church on Oct. 8, 1947.
