Father Denis Trayers

Father Denis Trayers and his twin brother Kevin Trayers, also a priest in the Diocese of Wichita, were born at Renville, Oranmore, County Galway, Ireland, on May 17, 1927. He studied for the priesthood at St. Peter College, Wexford, Ireland, where he was ordained in the seminary chapel for the Diocese of Wichita on June 8, 1958. The letter with his biographical information and picture for an article in the Advance Register on his Ordination did not arrive from Ireland so his twin brother, Father Kevin Trayers, supplied the needed information and a picture of himself. As an assistant Father Trayers served at St. Mary's Cathedral; Christ the King, Wichita; St. Mary's, Newton; Holy Cross, Hutchinson; and St. Patrick’s, Wichita. After working briefly as a chaplain at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Wichita, he became pastor of St. Mary's, Chase in 1970; Sacred Heart, Fredonia in 1972; and St. Francis Xavier, Cherryvale with All Saints, Liberty as a mission in 1984. A Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated for Father Trayers at St. Andrew Parish, Independence, on September 8, 1993. Father Trayers was buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Cherryvale.
