Father John Mullen

Father Mullen was born on February 19, 1926 at Curragh West, Dunmore, County Galway, Ireland. He studied for the priesthood at St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam and at St. Patrick’s College, Carlow, Ireland where he was ordained for the Diocese of Wichita on June 8, 1952. He served as an assistant at St. Teresa Parish in Hutchinson and Church of the Magdalen in Wichita. His assignments as pastor were to Harper from 1962 – 1967, to St. Teresa Parish in Hutchinson from 1967 – 1984 and to Holy Name in Coffeyville from 1984 – 1996. Father Mullen was also dean of the Coffeyville Deanery, served on the Boundary Commission, and was on the Diocesan CCD Board. On July 11, 1996 he retired and on April 8, 2002 he died at the Catholic Care Center in Wichita. Bishop Olmsted was principal celebrant and Father Francis Cox was homilist at a funeral Mass for Father Mullen in the St. Elizabeth Chapel at the Catholic Care Center. He was buried in Christ the King Cemetery in Kiltevna, County Galway, Ireland.
