Msgr. George Schmidt
Msgr. Schmidt was born the sixth of ten children in Liebenthal, KS, on December 3, 1914. For his education he attended St. Joseph School, Liebenthal; St. Joseph Military Academy, Hays; St. Gregory College, Shawnee, OK; and St. Louis Preparatory and Kenrick Seminaries, St. Louis, MO. Bishop Winkelmann ordained him on June 7, 1941 in St. Joseph Church, Liebenthal. As an assistant Msgr. Schmidt served at St. Rose of Lima Parish, Great Bend, for a brief time and at the cathedral. As pastor he was assigned to Sitka and Ashland; Schulte; Church of the Magdalen, Wichita (as founding pastor); Chase and Little River; and St. Mark’s. He also was the Director of the Propagation of the Faith and the Holy Childhood Association; a member of the Presbyteral Council; Vicar Forane of the North Sedgwick Deanery; a board member of Catholic Social Service; and on the Diocesan Board of Consultors. In 1957 he was named a Papal Chamberlain and in 1960 made a Domestic Prelate. At 75 years of age Msgr. Schmidt retired in 1990 and lived at the Priest Retirement Center in Wichita. Msgr. Schmidt died on April 5, 2005 and Bishop Michael Jackels was principal celebrant at his funeral Mass at the cathedral. He was buried in St. Mark’s Cemetery, St. Mark, KS.
