Father Nicholas Fowler

Father Fowler was born in Ernzen, Germany on May 8, 1857. After getting his early education in his native Germany he studied for the priesthood at Petits Seminaire at Bastogne, Belgium and at the American College at Louvain, Belgium. He was ordained for the Diocese of Leavenworth on March 25, 1882. In the Diocese of Wichita Fr. Fowler had three assignments: Florence and it’s missions from 1882 – 1893, Piqua and Owl Creek from 1893 – 1912 and St. Mark’s from 1912 – 1933. After his retirement in 1933 he lived at St. Francis Hospital until his death on August 2, 1938. “His hospitality was unbounded and his delightful sense of humor made him a favorite among the clergy of the diocese.” (The Catholic Advance, Aug. 6, 1938) Fr. Fowler’s funeral Mass was celebrated at the St. Francis Hospital Chapel by Father Anthony Hermann and the sermon was preached by Fr. Henry Courtney, O.S.B. of St. Benedict’s Abbey, Atchison, Kansas. His burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Wichita.
