December 4, 1920

Father Joseph Bogner

Father Bogner was born on June 1, 1879 in Bavaria and when he was six years old his parents moved to Oklahoma and then to Andale, Kansas. After studying at the Pontifical College Josephium in Columbus, OH he was ordained on June 9, 1906. He celebrated his First Mass at his home parish of St. Joseph in Andale and as a pastor he was assigned to Garden City, Moline, and Windthorst. During his fourteen years as a priest he suffered greatly from illness, “It is said he contracted stomach troubles in the work of his first missions, the long severe fasts, the irregular hours, the endless trips to and fro, can undermine even a strong and rugged frame, God only knows what Joseph suffered, and only his intimates know that oftentimes his pains were excruciating.” (The Catholic Advance, Dec. 11, 1920) He died on December 4, 1920 and his funeral Mass was celebrated by Msgr. Schmiehausen at Andale. Fr. Bogner was buried in St. Joseph Cemetery, Andale.
