Father Daniel Mulvihill

Father Mulvihill was born in Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland, on August 18, 1927. He did his seminary studies at St. Michael’s College, Listowel; Mungret College, Limerick; and Kenrick Seminary, St. Louis, MO. By being ordained by Bishop Carroll at St. Mary’s Cathedral on February 28, 1953 for the Diocese of Wichita, he followed a family tradition in coming to Kansas. His uncles, Monsignor Michael Mulvihill and Father Daniel Mulvihill were priests in the Diocese of Salina and an aunt, Sister Ann Joseph Mulvihill, was a Sister of St. Joseph in Concordia. As an assistant Father Mulvihill served in El Dorado, Pittsburg, and Blessed Sacrament Parish in Wichita. As pastor he served at Columbus with West Mineral as a mission, Cherryvale and Liberty, Chanute, and Galena and Baxter Springs. His last pastoral assignment was to Columbus and Scammon on September 2, 1993 until his retirement on May 19, 1996. During his priesthood he was DCCW moderator of the Pittsburg and Coffeyville Deaneries and in 1966 he was elected to the Retirement and Relief Board. Father Mulvihill died at the Catholic Care Center on December 16, 2006. Bishop Jackels was principal celebrant and Father Francis Cox preached the homily at Father Mulvihill’s funeral in the St. Elizabeth Chapel at the Catholic Care Center. He was buried at Ascension Cemetery in Wichita.
