December 20: Father Bernard Hudson

December 20, 1911

Father Bernard Hudson

Father Hudson was born in County Longford, Ireland in 1844 and studied for the priesthood at All Hallows Seminary in Dublin. Bishop Fink ordained him a priest in Leavenworth in 1879. Some of the places he served were Blaine, Irish Creek, Perry, and Scammon. Due to failing health, he resigned form active service in 1903 and became chaplain of Mount Carmel Hospital in Pittsburg. He continued in that position until his death at the hospital on December 20, 1911. “The patience and resignation with which the deceased bore his sufferings and submitted to the final summons were characteristic of the man, one of the Old Guard in the development of Catholicity in Kansas, to whose heroic self-sacrifice we are indebted for the present standing of the Church in the West.” (The Catholic Advance, Dec. 20, 1911) Rev. B. J. McKernan of Fort Scott celebrated the Mass of Requiem for Father Hudson in the hospital chapel. He was buried in the parish cemetery in Pittsburg.
