Bishop David M. Maloney
Bishop Maloney was born in Littleton, CO on March 15, 1912. He attended Littleton High School in Littleton; CO, St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, CO; and North American College in Rome where he was ordained on December 8, 1936. After his ordination he continued his studies in Rome and received a Licentiate in Sacred Theology in 1937 and a Doctorate in Canon Law in 1940. In the Archdiocese of Denver he was a pastor, chancellor, officialis and a consultor. Pope John XXIII named him a Domestic Prelate in 1959 and an Auxiliary Bishop in 1960. Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Wichita on December 6, 1967 and he was installed as Bishop of Wichita in St. Mary’s Cathedral on January 25, 1968. During his years as bishop he attended the four sessions of Vatican Council II, was a member of the Sacred Congregation of the Clergy, was a consultor for the Vatican Commission for the Revision of the Code of Canon Law, and served on the Dogma Committee for the National Conference of Bishops. In the diocese he opened Perpetual Help Center, the Catholic Indochinese Resettlement Office, and the Catholic Care Center along with starting three parishes: St. Paul – Newman Center in Wichita, St. Bridget in Lindsborg and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Wichita. A major project for Bishop Maloney was the renovation of the cathedral which was completed in 1977. He retired on July 16, 1982 and, following a year of teaching at St. John’s University in Jamaica, NY, returned to the diocese and lived at St. Francis Regional Medical Center until his death on February 15, 1995. Bishop Maloney’s funeral was celebrated in the cathedral and his burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Wichita.
