Msgr. Denis Dougherty

Msgr. Dougherty was born in Wichita on May 4, 1922 and attended St. Joseph, Blessed Sacrament and St. Anthony Grade Schools and Cathedral High School. After completing his studies for the priesthood at Kenrick Seminary, St. Louis, MO he was ordained on April 5, 1948 in St. Patrick Church in Wichita. As an assistant he served at St. Patrick Parish in Parsons and as pastor he served in Council Grove; Andover; Lyons; Mulvane; St. Patrick Parish, Parsons; Haysville; St. Anne, Wichita; and Colwich. On the diocesan level he was diocesan moderator of the DCCM; was Vicar Forane of the Wellington and South Sedgwick Deaneries; director of the religious education department at Bishop Carroll High School; and a member of the Presbyteral Council. In 1965 he was named a monsignor. Msgr. Dougherty’s funeral Mass was celebrated at Sacred Heart Parish in Colwich and he was buried next to his parents at Calvary Cemetery in Wichita. Msgr. Regan said of Msgr. Dougherty, “He had a great personality, a great sense of humor, he was generous, and was fun to be with.” (The Catholic Advance, Jan. 14, 2000)
