Father Frank Huslig

Father Huslig was born on November 28, 1909 in Odin, Kansas where he attended Holy Family Grade School and later finished his elementary education at St. Anthony’s Grade School in Fowler. After completing his high school and college studies at St. Lawrence Seminary, Mt. Calvary, WI he studied philosophy and theology at Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis, MO. He was ordained for the Diocese of Wichita on May 22, 1937 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Wichita. That same year he became the first resident pastor at Tampa with Council Grove and Skiddy as missions. During the Second World War he said Mass for German war prisoners at a camp in Council Grove. In 1945 he became pastor of St. Michael’s Parish in La Crosse and in 1951 he became pastor of St. Mark’s Parish at St. Mark. While on vacation in New Mexico in 1955 he suffered “fatigued heart” problems and later in the year retired from St. Mark’s Parish and returned to his family home in Fowler. (The Advance Register, July 7, 1961) Three years later he became chaplain of St. Luke’s Hospital in Marion where he died on July 1, 1961. Bishop Carroll was celebrant and Bishop Byrne was present for his funeral at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Wichita and, following a Mass of Burial in St. Anthony’s Church in Fowler, he was buried in the parish cemetery.
