Msgr. Daniel Reidy
Msgr. Reidy was born in Newtown, County Cork, Ireland on January 29, 1890 and came to the United States when he was eighteen to study for the Diocese of Wichita where his brother Maurice was a priest. He was ordained by Bishop Hennessy in the first ordination to be held in the new St. Mary’s Cathedral in Wichita on May 1, 1913. After serving as an assistant at the cathedral for four months, he was made pastor in Oswego for five years. In 1918 he was assigned to Council Grove and charged with building a new church in Tampa. On February 9, 1931 he began a thirty-six year assignment as pastor at St. Teresa’s Parish in Hutchinson. While there he was Diocesan Boy Scout Chaplain, auxiliary chaplain of the Hutchinson Naval Air Base, was named a monsignor in 1963, and was a diocesan consultor. After he retired from St. Teresa Parish in 1967 he was a chaplain at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Hutchinson. He died on March 20, 1976 as the senior priest of the diocese. Msgr. Charles Walsh, the vicar general, joined the priests of the diocese as the main celebrant of Msgr. Reidy’s funeral at St. Teresa Parish in Hutchinson. Monsignor Reidy was buried in Saint Teresa section of the Memorial Park Cemetery in Hutchinson, KS.
