Father Jules M. Monnier

Father Monnier was born in St. Amand, France, on Sept. 5, 1870. He studied at the Catholic College in Amand; the minor seminary in Cambrai; the Seminary of Philosophy in Solesmes; and completed his theological studies at the major seminary in Cambrai, all in France. He was ordained on June 29, 1895 in the cathedral in Cambrai. Following further studies in England and Belgium, he came to the United States in 1901 where he worked in the eastern part of the country. In 1908 he came to Wichita and was made rector of the Pro-Cathedral for nine years. The next 23 years were spent at St. Joseph Parish in Humboldt where he died of a heart attack on November 11, 1940. Bishop Winkelmann celebrated his funeral Mass at the parish church in Humboldt. Fr. Monnier was a talented musician and a member of the Diocesan Commission for Church Music.
