Father John O’Flynn

Father O’Flynn was born at Firies, Killarney, Ireland on May 31, 1896. He studied at Presentation Brothers’ School and St. Brendan’s Seminary in Killarney; St. Patrick’s College, Carlow; and St. Peter’s College, Wexford. Bishop William Codd ordained him for the Diocese of Wichita on June 15, 1919 at St. Peter’s College Chapel in Wexford. As an assistant he was assigned to St. Mary’s Cathedral in Wichita and St. Joseph Parish in Ellinwood. As pastor he served at Galena with the missions of Baxter Springs and Columbus; Chicopee with the missions of Cherokee and Fleming; and McCracken. In 1947 he because pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Cherryvale and remained there until his retirement on July 2, 1967. Bishop Maloney was the principal celebrant of his funeral Mass in St. Francis Xavier Parish on October 7, 1968. Fr. O’Flynn was buried in the parish cemetery in Cherryvale.
