Father David Egan

Father Egan was born in Midleton, County Cork, Ireland on October 19, 1879. He received his education at Buckley’s Academy, Cork City, Ireland; St. Peter’s College, Liverpool, England; St. Joseph’s College, Roosendaal, Holland; and Mill Hill, London, England. After he was ordained a priest for the Mill Hill Society of Foreign Missions in London on April 24, 1904 he taught in Liverpool and served in the missions at Madras, India. Following an illness he came to Wichita and was assigned to the cathedral as an assistant on August 14, 1911 and later served in Moline with Eureka and Hamilton as missions, St. Francis Hospital, and Halstead. He retired on July 1, 1950 and continued to live in Halstead until his death on October 23, 1962 as the senior member of the clergy at 83 years of age. During his priesthood he also served as editor of The Catholic Advance. Bishop Carroll celebrated Fr. Egan’s Pontifical Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Parish in Halstead on October 27, 1962.
