Msgr. J. George Herrman

Msgr. Herrman was born in Liebenthal, KS on March 9, 1892. His studies were completed at St. Benedict’s College, Atchison, KS; the American College, Louvain, Belgium; Frederick William University, Bonn, Germany; the Conisianum, Tyrol, Austria; and Kenrick Seminary, St. Louis, MO. Bishop Hennessy ordained him at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Wichita, on December 17, 1916. After serving as an assistant at St. Mary’s Parish in Newton, Kansas, for two years, he was assigned to St. Joseph Parish, Ost, for thirty-one years. In 1948 he was named pastor of St. Mary’s Parish, Newton, and remained there until his retirement just a few months before his death. During his priesthood he was Diocesan Director of the Holy Childhood, Dean of the Newton Deanery, and was made a monsignor in 1949. Bishop Carroll celebrated Msgr. Herrman’s funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Parish in Newton and he was buried in Liebenthal. “Monsignor Herrman was one of the pioneer priests of the Diocese of Wichita whose work was confined to a small area but whose achievements were monumental in the face of deprivation and hardship.” (The Advance, Oct. 20, 1969)
