Msgr. Bernard Schmiehausen

Msgr. Schmiehausen was born in Germany on November 1, 1856. He did his studies for the priesthood at the Royal Academy in Munster and at the American College in Louvain. After his ordination for the Diocese of Leavenworth on April 2, 1881 he served briefly in several places before being named pastor of St. Mark’s Parish, St. Mark, Kansas. In 1884 he was moved to Newton and in 1889 he was re-assigned to St. Mark’s Parish. In 1912 he moved to his final assignment at St. Joseph’s Parish in Andale. Under Bishop Hennessey he was Vicar General of the diocese and, following the death of the bishop, was administrator of the diocese until the appointment of Bishop Schwertner. Msgr. Schmiehausen’s Pontifical Requiem Mass was celebrated by Bishop Schwertner in Andale and Father Grueter, pastor of Colwich, preached the eulogy in German. In his personal comments, “Bishop Schwertner exhorted the congregation to remember always the noble example of Christian living given by their great pastor.” (The Catholic Advance, Nov. 10, 1923) Msgr. Schmiehausen was buried in the parish cemetery in Andale.
