Father Joseph Schacht

Father Schacht was born on May 13, 1919 in Pittsburgh, PA. After studying for the priesthood at the Josephinum, Worthington, OH he was ordained there in St. Turibius Chapel for the Diocese of Wichita on March 10, 1945. He was an assistant at St. Mary’s Cathedral; Blessed Sacrament, Wichita; St. Patrick, Wichita; and St. Joseph, Andale. As pastor he was assigned to Yates Center with Owl Creek as a mission, Chicopee with Cherokee as a mission, Arkansas City, Neodesha, and Council Grove with Strong City as a mission. On October 1, 1985 he retired to his hometown, Pittsburgh, PA, and lived there until his death on October 20, 1993. Father Schacht’s funeral Mass was celebrated at Risen Lord Church, St. Leo Worship Site, Pittsburgh, PA on October 25, 1993. Father Schacht was buried at Northside Catholic Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA. A Memorial Mass in the Diocese of Wichita was celebrated for him during the Fall Clergy Conference at the Spiritual Life Center on November 8, 1993.
