Father John C. Sullivan

Father Sullivan was born on September 28, 1859 in Wellsville, NY. After studying at New York University he became a lawyer and eventually a district judge. He decided to become a priest and studied at St. Jerome’s College, Berlin, Ontario, Canada. Bishop Hennessy ordained him at the Pro-Cathedral on September 23, 1894 where he remained as an assistant. As pastor he worked in the following towns: Danville, Cherryvale, Schulte, and Dodge City. In 1906 he was made rector of the Pro-Cathedral and oversaw the construction of the foundations of St. Mary’s Cathedral. His last assignment was to Scammon in 1913 where he died on September 3, 1922 following a long illness. Bishop Schwertner was celebrant of Fr. Sullivan’s funeral Mass at St. Bridget Parish in Scammon and Father John Davern of Walnut preached the sermon. Burial was in St. Bridget Cemetery in Scammon.
